The independent heating and cooling company across Hampton Roads and coastal Virginia

Smart Thermostat Installation

We install smart thermostats on residential heating and cooling systems across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina and Washington DC. Most homeowners call us when a new thermostat will not hold a schedule, when the wall unit has no common wire, or when a heat pump with auxiliary heat needs wiring the old control never handled. Give us a call with your system type and the thermostat you have in mind, and we will confirm compatibility before we come out and set it up on your equipment.

What the installation involves

We shut down power at the air handler and the breaker, pull the old control off the wall, and label every wire before anything comes loose. Then we check whether your existing cable has the conductors the new thermostat needs. Heat pumps need reversing valve and auxiliary heat terminals wired correctly, and two-stage equipment needs both stages mapped. We mount the new base level, configure the equipment type in the setup menu, and run heating and cooling to confirm each stage responds.

What we check and install

We look at the wire count first, since most smart thermostats need a constant 24-volt common wire that older cable often lacks. If it is missing, we run new thermostat wire or add an adapter at the board. We check the location too, because a thermostat on a hot exterior wall or in a draft reads the house wrong. We also test staging, fan operation, humidity control if your system supports it, and connect the unit to your home wifi.smththermostat scheduling before we leave.

How we decide it is the right call

A smart thermostat makes sense when your system can use it and your home has a reason for it. Regional humidity through hurricane season means dehumidification control matters here, and homes with a second floor that runs warm often benefit from better scheduling. If your equipment is old, short cycling, or the airflow is restricted, we say so and deal with that first. A new control cannot fix low refrigerant, a failing blower motor, or ductwork that leaks into a damp crawlspace.

Smart Thermostat Installation — quick answers

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Most will, but heat pumps need the reversing valve and auxiliary heat terminals wired and configured correctly. We confirm your model supports heat pump staging before installation, then verify both heating stages respond during testing.

What if my wiring has no common wire?

That is common in older homes. We either run new thermostat cable to the air handler or install an adapter at the control board so the thermostat gets steady 24-volt power instead of borrowing it.

Can one smart thermostat control my whole house?

Only if you have one system. Homes with separate upstairs and downstairs equipment need a thermostat for each zone. We check how your ductwork and equipment are split before quoting the work.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads against the actual room temperature. That short conversation tells us what parts to load on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why, before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system through a full cycle and measure temperatures at the supply and return. If something upstream caused the failure, we tell you so it does not repeat.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know salt airCoastal homes lose condenser coils to salt corrosion years before inland systems do. We look for fin damage and pitted line sets on every visit, because a clean-looking unit can still be shedding capacity from the outside in.
  • Humidity is part of the jobHurricane-season air loads a system in ways a temperature reading will not show. If your house feels clammy at 74 degrees, we look at run times, airflow and drainage rather than just adding refrigerant and leaving.
  • Crawlspace realitiesHigh water tables mean wet ground under ductwork, rusted plenums and condensate lines with nowhere good to drain. We check what is happening under the floor, since that is often where comfort problems actually begin.
  • Straight answersWe tell you what failed, what it will take to fix, and whether a repair makes sense on an older system. No pressure to replace something that has honest years left in it, and no vague diagnosis.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
