The independent heating and cooling company across Hampton Roads and coastal Virginia

Heat Pump Not Heating

If your heat pump is running but the air coming out of the vents feels cool or lukewarm, we diagnose and repair it at homes across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina and Washington DC. Call us and we will get a technician scheduled. Before we arrive, check that the thermostat is set to heat with fresh batteries, look for a tripped breaker, change a dirty filter and clear leaves or snow away from the outdoor unit. Those five checks are safe and sometimes solve it.

What This Repair Involves

A heat pump that is not heating usually points to one of a handful of causes, and our job is to find which one before parts get replaced. We arrive, listen to what you have noticed, then test the system in heating mode and watch how it behaves through a full cycle. Some units are stuck in cooling because a reversing valve is not shifting. Others are low on refrigerant charge, iced over, or running on backup heat only. We explain what we find in plain terms.my my heat pump matters here.

What We Check

We start at the thermostat and work outward, confirming it is calling for heat and that the wiring to the air handler is intact. Then we check the reversing valve and its solenoid, the defrost control board and sensor, the outdoor coil for ice or blockage, the compressor and contactor, and the auxiliary heat strips. Salt air along the coast eats at coils and electrical terminals, so we look closely at corrosion. Airflow gets measured too, since a clogged filter or crushed duct can mimic a refrigerant problem.

How We Decide It Is The Right Call

We do not replace a compressor or a reversing valve on a hunch. Readings have to line up with the symptom, so we compare pressures, temperature split across the coil and amp draw before recommending anything. If a defrost sensor or a control board is the fault, that is a smaller repair and we say so. If the system is aging, leaking refrigerant in more than one spot and the coil is corroded through, we lay out repair against replacement and let you choose with real numbers in front of you.

Heat Pump Not Heating — quick answers

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?

Often the reversing valve has not switched into heating mode, or the unit is in a defrost cycle, which is normal and brief. If cool air lasts more than fifteen minutes, have it looked at.

Is ice on the outdoor unit a problem?

A light frost is normal in cold, damp weather and the defrost cycle clears it. A thick shell of ice that never melts means the defrost control, sensor or refrigerant charge needs attention.

My heat pump only runs on emergency heat. Why?

Emergency heat means the compressor side is not carrying the load, so the electric strips are doing all the work. It will heat the house but costs far more to run. Get it diagnosed.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads against the actual room temperature. That short conversation tells us what parts to load on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why, before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system through a full cycle and measure temperatures at the supply and return. If something upstream caused the failure, we tell you so it does not repeat.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know salt airCoastal homes lose condenser coils to salt corrosion years before inland systems do. We look for fin damage and pitted line sets on every visit, because a clean-looking unit can still be shedding capacity from the outside in.
  • Humidity is part of the jobHurricane-season air loads a system in ways a temperature reading will not show. If your house feels clammy at 74 degrees, we look at run times, airflow and drainage rather than just adding refrigerant and leaving.
  • Crawlspace realitiesHigh water tables mean wet ground under ductwork, rusted plenums and condensate lines with nowhere good to drain. We check what is happening under the floor, since that is often where comfort problems actually begin.
  • Straight answersWe tell you what failed, what it will take to fix, and whether a repair makes sense on an older system. No pressure to replace something that has honest years left in it, and no vague diagnosis.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
